Frank News Release Date: July 18, 2023 Contact: Morgan Warthin , (307) 344-2015 On Wednesday, July 19, beginning at 6 a.m., West Thumb Geyser Basin in the southern part of Yellowstone National Park will close temporarily for road improvements. The closed areas include: West Thumb Geyser Basin parking lot West Thumb Geyser Basin Trail (including boardwalks and restrooms) Duck Lake Trail Yellowstone Lake Overlook Trail The closed areas are expected to reopen at 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 20. Expect up to 30-minute delays. Drive slowly through construction zones and be alert to workers, heavy equipment, wildlife, and other hazards. UPDATE: Yellowstone National Park releases name of individual involved in incident [foot found in Abyss Pool] at West Thumb Geyser Basin ews Release Date: November 17, 2022 Contact: Morgan Warthin , (307) 344-2015 MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY - Yellowstone National Park announced today that the human foot found in Abyss Pool, located in the West Thumb Geyser Basin, belonged to Il Hun Ro, a 70-year-old male from Los Angeles, California. Yellowstone law enforcement officers received the positive identification based on DNA analysis in the last three weeks and notified the family. In August 2022, staff discovered part of a foot in a shoe floating in the well-known thermal feature and an investigation led by Yellowstone law enforcement officers began. The investigation determined, to the best of our knowledge, that an unwitnessed incident involving one individual happened on the morning of July 31, 2022, at Abyss Pool, and no foul play occurred. Frank News Release Date: September 12, 2022 Contact: Morgan Warthin , (307) 344-2015 West Thumb Geyser Basin , located in the southern part of Yellowstone National Park, will be closed until further notice due to hazardous conditions. On Tuesday, Sept. 6, Northwestern Energy staff reported smoke coming out of a small building near the bookstore that houses a solar battery energy storage system at West Thumb Geyser Basin. Park structural fire crews were notified and dispatched to the location. They did not see flames when they arrived, but there was smoke. The exterior of the building was not damaged. Yellowstone National Park incident at Abyss Pool, West Thumb Geyser Basin; Visitors: For your own safety, stay on boardwalks and trails in thermal areas Abyss Pool at West Thumb Geyser Basin NPS / Diane Renkin On Tuesday, August 16, 2022, an employee found part of a foot, in a shoe, floating in Abyss Pool , located in the West Thumb Geyser Basin in the southern part of Yellowstone National Park. An investigation by Yellowstone National Park law enforcement officers is ongoing. Evidence from the investigation thus far suggests that an incident involving one individual likely occurred on the morning of July 31, 2022, at Abyss Pool. Currently, the park believes there was no foul play. The investigation is continuing to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
