Roads begin to open annually this time of year for the summer season.   On Saturday, April 20, entrance fees will be waived in celebration of  National Park Week . Roads opening April 19 West Entrance (West Yellowstone, Montana) to Old Faithful (via Madison Junction) Mammoth Hot Springs to Old Faithful (via Norris Junction and Madison Junction) Norris Junction to Canyon Village Additional  park roads  will open throughout May, weather permitting. Conditions permitting, most park roads will open to oversnow travel by snowmobile and snowcoach. Annually from mid-December until mid-March, visitors travel most of the park’s roads by  commercially guided snowmobiles and snowcoaches  and via the  non-commercially guided snowmobile access program . Frank Due to extremely heavy snow received this week in Yellowstone National Park, the park’s efforts to open interior roads by  April 15  has been delayed. Crews are working to clear nearly a foot of snow and remove large drifts from storms on Tuesday, April 12. Although progress has been made, the normal opening schedule will be altered. The park will attempt to open the following road segments tomorrow as scheduled: West Entrance to Old Faithful Mammoth Hot Springs to Norris However, more snow is forecasted in the park tonight with the potential for freezing rain over the weekend. Other road segments will open as conditions allow. Frank News Release Date: September 16, 2021 Contact: Morgan Warthin , (307) 344-2015 At Old Faithful early Thursday morning, September 16, park rangers provided initial care to a 19-year-old woman from Rhode Island with second- and third-degree burns to 5% of her body. Due to the injuries, the patient (a concessions employee) was taken by ambulance to West Yellowstone and then life-flighted to the Burn Center at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. This incident is under investigation. The ground in hydrothermal areas is fragile and thin, and there is scalding water just below the surface. Yellowstone’s First Bear Sighting of 2021       News Release Date: March 16, 2021 Contact: Morgan Warthin , (307) 344-2015 MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY – On Saturday, March 13, a pilot supporting park wildlife studies saw the first grizzly bear of 2021. From the air, the pilot watched the bear interact with wolves at a carcass in the northern part of the park. This is the first sighting of a grizzly bear in the park this year, although tracks have been seen on several occasions in the last two weeks. The first bear sighting of 2020 occurred on March 7. Male grizzlies come out of hibernation in early March. Females with cubs emerge in April and early May. When bears emerge from hibernation, they look for food and often feed on elk and bison that died over the winter. Sometimes, bears will react aggressively while feeding on carcasses.
