Yellowstone National Park winter weather advisory: Expected snow may close Sylvan Pass and other roads Visitors to Yellowstone National Park should be aware that winter weather is expected in the park this evening, especially on high elevation passes. Weather can change quickly this time of year in the mountains. The weather forecast for Friday evening, Sept. 22 predicts 90% precipitation with possible 5-9 inches of snow accumulation on Sylvan Pass, located on the East Entrance Road. If road conditions deteriorate due to the predicted winter weather, staff will close the East Entrance Road to Sylvan Pass and other roads as appropriate. If needed, staff will evaluate conditions the morning of Saturday, Sept. 23 and will reopen the road (if it closes) when conditions allow. The public are asked to: Anticipate temporary road closures near Sylvan Pass because of increased avalanche danger from recent snowfall and warm temperatures. Frank After repairing damage caused by the recent record-breaking flood event, the Beartooth Highway (US-212), located east of the park’s Northeast Entrance between Red Lodge, Montana, and Cooke City, Montana, partially reopened June 28. This partial reopening includes 23 miles of the Beartooth Highway beginning at the US-212/WY-296 junction to the Beartooth Ski Hill parking lot. Travelers will need to turn around at the ski hill parking lot due to flood damage on the remainder of the highway. National Park Service announces $50 million in emergency funding; expedited plans to reopen 80 percent of Yellowstone Park also making progress to identify expedient temporary options to restore access to Gardiner and Cooke City, Montana MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, Wyo. — During a visit to Yellowstone National Park and Gardiner, Montana, on Sunday, June 19, National Park Service Director Chuck Sams with Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Cam Sholly announced $50 million to kick-start recovery efforts from record breaking floods. They also announced that in addition to the park’s southern loop reopening on June 22, the park’s northern loop is expected to reopen in two weeks or less following completion of clean-up, repairs and final inspection of the northern loop infrastructure. This will allow visitors to access Dunraven Pass, Tower, Mammoth Hot Springs and Norris opening visitor access to approximately 80 percent of Yellowstone National Park. Additional details...

UPDATE: June 13, 2022 at 4:32 p.m. Please find a video just posted to Flickr that underscores the severity of the situation in Yellowstone National Park. The park’s helicopter manager recorded the video from the park’s helicopter of the Gardner River and portions of the road between Mammoth Hot Springs and the North Entrance through the Gardner Canyon. Segments of the paved road are eroded and washed out in several places due to high water levels. Yellowstone will continue to communicate about this hazardous situation as more information is available. Frank Due to extremely heavy snow received this week in Yellowstone National Park, the park’s efforts to open interior roads by April 15 has been delayed. Crews are working to clear nearly a foot of snow and remove large drifts from storms on Tuesday, April 12. Although progress has been made, the normal opening schedule will be altered. The park will attempt to open the following road segments tomorrow as scheduled: West Entrance to Old Faithful Mammoth Hot Springs to Norris However, more snow is forecasted in the park tonight with the potential for freezing rain over the weekend. Other road segments will open as conditions allow. The road between the North Entrance, Mammoth Hot Springs and Northeast Entrance is open year-round. The park accidentally undercounted recreation-visit numbers from one entrance station. With this adjustment, the park hosted 882,078 (instead of 872,695 previously reported ) recreation visits in September 2021.
