NPS

Plan and enrich your visit to Yellowstone National Park with the official, free National Park Service app. Digitally explore the world's first national park—by map or by topic of interest. Discover the natural and cultural stories in context with their locations. Find the information you need about visitor centers, events, lodging, places to eat and shop, and services throughout the park.

Features

Stories

[iOS version only] Additional, interpretive content can be explored right from the home screen and from sites where those stories are appropriate. These stories range across themes such as bear safety, hydrothermal features, wildlife, and cultural groups.

Explore Yellowstone's Sites

Discover park stories by exploring collections right on the home screen. Quickly delve into a topic or site that interests you, from the major resources of the park to going on an enriched self-guided walking tour. Alternatively, you can explore Yellowstone via the interactive map, or even search for a site you've heard about.

Real-time Statuses*

See when the predicted eruptions will be for six of Yellowstone's geysers, check out which campgrounds and lodges still have availability, and check out the current road statuses. * - Internet connection required to receive the latest updates.

Interactive Map

See where you are located within the park, find what is nearby; see the current status of roads, campgrounds, and lodges right on the map; and show specific service locations on this enhanced map. It's a great way to found where things are in the park, or what is near you when you're in the park. If you've downloaded the app content ahead of your visit, the map will continue to work for you without an internet connection!

Favorites

Plan your visit and reminder yourself of places, topics, tours, and events that interest you. The app will even notify you when you get near a saved location.

Collage

Ready to share your experience? Tap here to create your very own collage of images you've taken of your Yellowstone experience, then share that collage with friends and family.

Calendar and Alerts

Get up-to-date information from the National Park Service about what is happening in Yellowstone, including ranger programs and road construction (requires internet connection to receive the initial data and for any updates).

Accessibility

Audio-described sites and alternative text for images. This app includes up-to-date accessibility information for facilities and some trails in the park.

Using the App

Cellular service within the park is extremely limited. In order to make use of the app while in Yellowstone, follow these simple steps before you arrive:

  1. Download the app.
  2. In the app, select the "Settings" option.
  3. Tap the choice "Download Offline Content."

By doing this, most of the app content will be available for use in the park (the exceptions being alerts, calendar updates, and real-time updates—accessing those items before leaving service will at least keep that information in the app). Even without cellular service, the app will be able to share your location on the map and bring up all site content.

Download the App

The app is free and available on the App Store and on Google Play.

Upcoming Features and Additions

We are constantly improving the NPS Yellowstone app so that it is the best digital experience and the perfect way to enhance your visit to the park.

Here is a list of what we are currently working on:

  • Additional audio tours: We are working on new self-guided audio tours for Biscuit Basin, Black Sand Basin, and West Thumb Geyser Basin.
  • Natural feature information: Our team has been working on descriptions and images for many natural features in the park, including mountains, lakes, and more hydrothermal features to add to the app.

Here is what we have recently added to the app to make your Yellowstone experience even better:

  • Interpretive stories (iOS only): A new feature in the iOS version of the app, where additional, interpretive content can be explored right from the home screen and from sites, as appropriate.
  • Mud Volcano audio tour: Explore this rather aromatic thermal basin with the help of this audio tour.

Be sure to go to Settings and Download Offline Content before heading into the park to make sure you have these latest additions.
