Yellowstone law enforcement officers received the positive identification based on DNA analysis in the last three weeks and notified the family. In August 2022, staff discovered part of a foot in a shoe floating in the well-known thermal feature and an investigation led by Yellowstone law enforcement officers began. The investigation determined, to the best of our knowledge, that an unwitnessed incident involving one individual happened on the morning of July 31, 2022, at Abyss Pool, and no foul play occurred.   Yellowstone visitation statistics for October 2022 MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY – Yellowstone National Park hosted 232,117 recreation visits in October 2022. This is a 27% decrease from October 2021 (316,662 recreational visits), and a 36% increase from October 2019 (171,339) which was the last year before COVID. On June 13, all entrances to Yellowstone National Park closed due to  historic flooding . Park visitors were evacuated over the next 24 hours. On June 22, the East, South and West entrances to the park reopened on a limited entry basis. On July 2, entry restrictions on the East, South and West entrances were removed. The North (Gardiner, Montana) and Northeast (Cooke City/Silver Gate, Montana) entrances remained closed to visitor vehicle traffic through September. The Northeast Entrance reopened to regular visitor traffic on Oct. 15 and the North Entrance reopened on Oct. 30. The  hotel closed  immediately after the  historic June flood  because of damage to the area’s wastewater system. The hotel will be closed to overnight guests and food services will not be provided.  The hotel gift shop, coffee and beverage service, lobby and ski shop will be open.   Elk reduction program begins Saturday, November 5 MOOSE, WY — An elk reduction program begins Saturday, November 5, in Grand Teton National Park. The park’s enabling legislation of 1950 authorizes Grand Teton National Park to jointly administer an elk reduction program with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department when necessary for the proper management and conservation of the Jackson Elk Herd.   Respective federal and state resource managers have reviewed available data and concluded that the 2022 program is necessary. The need for the program is determined annually and is based on the status of the Jackson Elk Herd, including estimated herd size and composition and the number of elk on supplemental feed on the National Elk Refuge. A total of 475 permits are authorized for the 2022 program. Frank MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY – The West, South and East entrances and nearly all roads in Yellowstone National Park will be closed to regular vehicle traffic Nov. 1. In anticipation of hazardous driving conditions, the following roads will close on Friday, Oct. 21 at 8 p.m.:  Tower Junction to Canyon Junction (Dunraven Pass)  West Thumb to Old Faithful (Craig Pass). This is a 36% decrease from September 2021 (882,078 recreational visits), the most-visited September on record, and an 18% decrease from September 2019 (693,118) which was the last year before COVID.   NEWS RELEASE Flood Recovery Updates: Northeast Entrance Road in Yellowstone National Park to open Oct. 15 Northeast Entrance Road repair progress on Oct. 13, 2022. --  NPS / Cam Sholly UPDATE: Oct. 13, 2022 Northeast Entrance Road in Yellowstone National Park to open Oct. 15 MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY – Yellowstone National Park’s  Northeast Entrance Road  (Tower Junction to the Northeast Entrance in Cooke City/Silver Gate, Montana) will open to regular visitor vehicle traffic Saturday, Oct.15 at 8 a.m. Visitors should keep the following details in mind when driving the road: All flood damaged sections on the Northeast Entrance Road will be paved by Oct.15, except for the section of road near the popular trailhead to Trout Lake, which will be paved in the upcoming 10 days. Traffic will be permitted on this segment of road while repairs continue. Anticipate traffic control in the area and short delays to facilitate one-way traffic through this section.
