HIGH fire danger in Yellowstone - NPS
HIGH fire danger in Yellowstone The parkwide fire danger level for Yellowstone is now HIGH. Currently, there are no active wildland fires in the park. Currently, there are no fire restrictions in place or planned in the park. Campfires are only permitted within established fire rings in campgrounds and some backcountry campsites. Campfires must always be attended and cold to the touch before abandoning. Soak, stir, feel, repeat. The Greater Yellowstone area is a fire-adapted ecosystem . Fire plays an important role in maintaining the health of this area’s wildlife habitat and vegetation. Stay informed about current fire activity in Yellowstone. Frank Incident details A 71-year-old woman from West Chester, Pennsylvania, was gored by a bull bison near Storm Point at Yellowstone Lake on Wednesday, June 29. The woman and her daughter inadvertently approached the bison as they were returning to their vehicle at the trailhead, causing the bull bison to charge. The woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries after the encounter and was transported by ambulance to West Park Hospital in Cody, Wyoming. This incident remains under investigation, and there is no additional information to share. This is the third reported bison and visitor incident in 2022. NEWS RELEASE Beartooth Highway (US-212) partially reopened with nighttime closures Stay informed about road status and weather conditions Views of Pilot and Index Peaks along the Beartooth Highway NPS / Jacob W. Frank After repairing damage caused by the recent record-breaking flood event, the Beartooth Highway (US-212), located east of the park’s Northeast Entrance between Red Lodge, Montana, and Cooke City, Montana, partially reopened June 28. This partial reopening includes 23 miles of the Beartooth Highway beginning at the US-212/WY-296 junction to the Beartooth Ski Hill parking lot. Travelers will need to turn around at the ski hill parking lot due to flood damage on the remainder of the highway. The towns of Cooke City, Montana, and Silver Gate, Montana, remain open for visitor travel. Temporary road closures due to winter weather can occur any time on the highway given its high elevation. NEWS RELEASE Man gored by bison in Yellowstone National Park Always stay more than 25 yards (23 m) away from bison Bison and visitors using the boardwalk at Fountain Paintpots (this photo is not representative of the specific incident described below). NPS / Jim Peaco A 34-year-old male from Colorado Springs, Colorado, was gored by a bull bison near Giant Geyser at Old Faithful on June 27. The male was walking with his family on a boardwalk when a bull bison charged the group. Family members did not leave the area, and the bull bison continued to charge and gored the male. The male sustained an injury to his arm and was transported by ambulance to the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.
